About MinEx

MinEx is the national Health & Safety Council for New Zealand’s extractives sector - the mining, quarrying and tunnelling industry.

Our principal purpose is to help the industry achieve its goal of being free from fatalities, injuries and diseases.

Our Board consists of representatives from Straterra, Aggregate and Quarry Association, Civil Contractors NZ (tunnelling), AUSIMM, Institute of Quarrying NZ, and E tū representing workers.

MinEx also provides centralised industry representation with Government and other agencies on health and safety legislation, regulations, guidelines and training.

MinEx represented the mining and quarry industry as the Government developed the new Health and Safety at Work Act and associated regulations/guidelines. This ensured these are workable and will deliver better health and safety in our sector.

MinEx’s other roles include:

  • collection and analysis of industry incident and accident statistics

  • forming an industry employer database

  • working actively with the industry and WorkSafe to develop health and safety standards and guidelines, and where required development of independent guidance

  • communicating health and safety issues to the mining and quarry sector.

Our Mission: To be an effective voice for the New Zealand mining and quarrying sector on health and safety issues, identify opportunities and provide leadership for the improvement of health and safety in the sector.

Our Principles:

  • A healthy, safe and sustainable extractives sector, achieved in partnership with workers, businesses and government.

  • Collaboration and sharing of safety lessons and good practices in health and safety management.

  • Everyone has a personal responsibility for the health and safety of themselves and those affected by our work.
